    • No Pressure on the Defending Champs

    • Greenwood, IN - "Like always our guys have done a great job this off-season and we're very confident that we're going to come out and be able to compete." Eric Moore has built a dominant program in Johnson County and it is no surprise his players have put in the work necessary to achieve success this year. However, the 2009 season will be more of a challenge than the previous one. Center Grove fans had hoped the 2008 senior class would be the one to bring the school a state title. They did just that in an amazing come-from-behind classic against conference rival Carmel in the 5A State Championship game. Coach Moore admits, the kids who are still in the program aren't quite sure how to use the title, defending champion. "Actually it's sort of fun, we don't have the pressure. Last year there was pressure, everybody thought that team was good and they thought they were good. We have to do a little convincing this year, these guys aren't maybe as confident as last year's group was, but they're talented, physical, we have good size and good speed, but we just don't seem to be carrying around the pressure we did last year." Moore is not exaggerating when complimenting the departing Trojans. 32 Seniors will not be easily replaced but the players we spoke with Monday are confident they can at least help carry on the Center Grove tradition. "We look at it as an opportunity, we finally get a chance to play, commented senior quarterback Kyle Barth. "There's a lot of guys that have gotten a lot bigger and stronger." Senior Garrett Mack was one of the underclassmen who played an integral part of the 2008 Center Grove team and will be expected to lead the younger Trojans in 2009. "A bunch of leadership is gone, but we have alot of good seniors stepping up this year and have developed really well throughout the off-season, so I think we should be good in leadership." Mack has verbally committed to play for Ball State in 2010, but is 100% focused on finishing his senior season in Johnson County strong. "We're eager to get out there and show Center Grove what we've got." The Trojans begin their title defense with an August 21st trip to Perry Merdian.
