Avon won its first state championship in any sport and Mishawaka Marian senior Adam Sumrall won the individual title at the 73rd IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.

After a rain-soaked first round on Tuesday, Avon (293-294-587) (+11) maintained its slim lead over Evansville North (296-293-589) (+13) on Wednesday to win by two strokes under very warm, sunny skies. Defending state champion Indianapolis Cathedral (306-302-608) placed third followed by Floyd Central (306-306-612) and Hamilton Southeastern (299-315-614).

Avon, coached by Brent Sailor, boasted three individuals in the top 10. Sophomore Patrick Rodgers tied for second overall with a 142 (69-73), senior Andrew Wegeng turned in a 146 (74-72) to tie for seventh, and senior Jonathan Jozefowski tied for ninth at 148 (76-72). Junior David Janney tied for 18th with 151 (74-77) and senior Tyler McGathney finished 59th at 173 (85-88).

A four-year state finals qualifier, Sumrall saved his best for last after finishing as the state runner-up by one stroke as a sophomore in 2007 and a 12th place finish last year. Sumrall started the day tied for 12th after an opening round 74 just making the individual cut. He recorded seven birdies on Wednesday, three on the back nine, to post a 140 (74-66) (-4) overtaking the first day leader Rodgers, who double bogeyed the 18th hole, and Evansville North junior David Mills (71-71) who tied for second. Sumrall was later honored with the Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award.

Roncalli sophomore Andrew Fogg, who began the day tied for 12th, cut four strokes off his opening day 74 to finish fourth at 144. Lebanon senior John Frisby (72-73) and Evansville Central junior Tyler Merkel (71-74) tied for fifth place at 145.

Defending state champion Corey Ziedonis, a senior from Indianapolis Cathedral finished tied for 15th with a 149 (73-76).
